Civic & Community Introduction

Callington is a compact town situated on the cross roads of two ‘A’ roads. The A390 goes from Tavistock & Gunnislake to Liskeard  and the A388 comes up from Saltash and continues through the town north to Launceston and Bude. There is a southerly by-pass but not one for North/South traffic. The nearest railway station is at Gunnislake. Kelly Bray sits to the north of Callington, at what was the terminal of the Gunnislake to Callington railway line. The A388 links Kelly Bray to the rest of the parish. The parish comprises the town of Callington, the residential area of Kelly Bray and surrounding farmland within the parish boundary. Callington is situated in centrally in South East Cornwall. Although very much part of Cornwall and its rural beauty, it is within ten miles of Saltash and across the Tamar in Devon is the city of Plymouth. Many people residing in Callington commute to Plymouth for work and a wider range of retail outlets.

Callington currently accommodates a population of approximately  5200 persons [4783 in the 2001 census].  Since the mid 1970’s the population of the town has nearly doubled. This means that the town is undergoing considerable change that looks likely to continue. The town is expanding and the challenge is to make certain that the facilities and infrastructure also change in order to retain the quality of life of its inhabitants.

There are many events both civic an community focused that happen in Callington throughout the year which are actively sponsored in some way by the Town Council in partnership with many other businesses and agencies such as:

Ginsters - Firework Display
Christmas Lights Committee
Callington Town Forum
Callington Twinning Association
Callington Lions Club - Honey Fair, Gala Day and Carnival
Callington Branch of The Royal British Legion - Remembrance Parade and Civic Service
Callington Heritage Centre
Callington Town Band

The Town Council also supports smaller groups within Callington and Kelly Bray by the way of subsidising local club and charity events held within the Town Hall. Grants

Did you know that the Town & Parish Councils can give a small grant to a local club or society organisation that can demonstrate that the events they run directly benefit as many people as possible who are from the electorate of Callington and Kelly Bray?

To find out more about the community grant scheme please contact the Clerk, contact details are listed below the navigation menu on the left hand side.

Please do not enquire or canvass unless your organisation is local to Callington or Kelly Bray as Central Government legislation forbids the giving of grants by parish councils to individuals or national charities - sorry! You will be required to apply in writing and be prepared to submit your organisations accounts for scrutiny.
